Art 2

Woke with inspiration after a nap and made a sketch. Hooray!

With apologies for the quality of the photo. One day I'll have a lovely flat-bed scanner and everything will be sweet.

The picture I had in mind was of a coldly beautiful, clean-limbed elf-woman riding a majestic white horse. After the first trial (the initial scrawlings in which I put pencil to paper and try to put shape to an idea), which consisted entirely of the horse's head looking downcast, I decided on a different approach. The horse is not happy with the rider, and the rider is enjoying the horse's misery.

Ideas for how to improve this:

Sketch a few pictures from photos of horses rearing up. I'm sure I've got the poor thing's spine too twisted.

Figure out just where I want the elf's right hand. There's a vague talon'd thing, meant to be twisted into the horse's mane, but it didn't really work out. I like the left arm, with the lengthened fore-arm and all.

Possibly the left fore-leg of the horse could be moved or eliminated.

Note on the legs:

The right leg is considerably odd compared to the left leg. It's small and nearly stick like, even taking into account the perspective. What can be glimpsed of the left leg is a whole lot sexier, and more in proportion (although possibly too large). Initially this was an accident, but I liked the effect, which I think puts across the kind of insubstantiability of elves in general. Accidents of this sort happen a lot in art, or at least in my art. My hands just do their thing sometimes, and I'm like, "hey, that's actually pretty good".

Notes on the face:

The eyes. Oh I really screwed them up the first time. They were bulgy, bug-like, and far too heavy. But I have an eraser, so that was okay.

The mouth was a little difficult, I just couldn't get it right. But then I remembered to add a bit of shading to indicate lips.

The ears... I love the ears. Perfect the first time.

I would like one day to make a painting based on this. At the moment I a) don't have any canvas, b) don't have any space. I'm still tidying my room, and anything beyond sketching and computer work will have to wait 'til that's done. I will get it done, I will...
